Overview of 22LR Match Ammo

22LR match ammo is built for one job: putting every round through the same hole. Bulk 22 LR is fine for plinking and casual range time, but match-grade 22 LR is manufactured to tighter weight, dimensional, and velocity tolerances so the cartridge stops being the variable. If you're shooting smallbore, NRL22, biathlon, rimfire benchrest, or any precision rimfire discipline, match 22 LR ammo is where accuracy actually starts.

What Makes 22 LR Match-Grade

"Match" isn't a marketing word at this tier. Match-grade 22 LR uses lot-tested powder charges, hand-inspected bullets, and uniform priming compound for consistent ignition. Bullet weight tolerance often drops below 0.1 grain, and velocity standard deviations on premium match loads sit in the single digits. The result is a round that doesn't add its own error to your group, which is why competitive shooters lot-test ammo against their specific rifle before a season.

Subsonic Velocity and Why It Matters

Most 22 LR match ammo is loaded subsonic or just below the speed of sound, typically 1,040 to 1,080 fps. Crossing the sound barrier mid-flight destabilizes the bullet and opens groups, especially past 50 yards. True match loads stay subsonic from muzzle to target, which is why every serious smallbore and rimfire benchrest load is tuned this way. Standard-velocity 22 LR sits in the same envelope and is often considered the entry point to match-grade ammunition.

Top Match 22 LR Ammo Brands

Match-grade 22 LR is a small club. A handful of names dominate every rimfire match line in the country:

  • Lapua: Center-X, Midas+, X-ACT, and Polar Biathlon. The gold standard for benchrest and Olympic smallbore.
  • Eley: Tenex, Match, Match Xtra Plus, and Team. The British house behind decades of competition-winning match rimfire.
  • SK: Standard Plus, Long Range Match, Rifle Match, and Pistol Match. Lapua's sister brand and the best price-to-accuracy ratio in the category.
  • RWS: R50, R100, and Target Rifle. German-made, lot-tested, and a staple in international competition.
  • CCI: Standard Velocity, Green Tag, and Pistol Match. American-made and the go-to for entry-level match shooting and training.
  • Federal Gold Medal Match: 711B and Ultra Match. Federal's true match line, distinct from the budget AutoMatch product. Browse the full Federal ammo lineup for related options.

Where Match 22 LR Earns Its Price

Match 22 LR is the right round for precision rifle training, smallbore competition, NRL22, biathlon, rimfire benchrest, and any scenario where an accuracy failure costs you a stage or a target. It's also what you reach for when testing a new rifle, optic, or barrel: if the ammo isn't the variable, every flyer points somewhere else. This is one of the best .22 ammo I have used. It runs great in our 10/22's and our tx22's.

Lots of duds, sometimes 3%+. Very inconsistent velocities if you chrono them, but you don't need a chrono to feel the difference in recoil from shot to shot, or hear the very different sound of the report from shot to shot. Expect lots of practice clearing every type of malfunction, failure to feed, failure to extract, failure to eject. And they're also really, really dirty. I have one .22 pistol that sometimes keyholes, but only with Automatch. It's just that bad. On the plus side, I get even more duds and even more malfunctions of every kind with Remington and Winchester bulk pack. Additionally I've never had a case head rupture or a split case with any Federal product. That's more than I can say for Winchester. I've even had case heads rupture with the expensive Winchester Super-X that comes in the plastic trays. Look, this is the cheap stuff. It's floor sweepings. You knew this going in. It's good enough for plinking, but keep a cleaning rod with you in case you get a dud stuck in the bore. You will get lots of practice clearing malfunctions. Maybe if you shoot them in a revolver or a manually operated repeating rifle they aren't so bad, but all my .22s are semiauto. Despite the name--hey Federal, is it a joke? it's not very funny--Automatch makes every one of them choke and puke, the 10/22, the Mk. III pistol, the Henry AR7, the Kel-Tec P17, every one of them. It's garbage. And I keep buying it, because I'm not going to buy the expensive stuff, not when all I do is plink, maybe practice some point-shooting.

Easy to order online. I get it 5-7 days; I live in NJ. Ammo always fires, no duds. I also like the history of the bullet and caliber, how it came to be. This is the only place I get my ammo from.

They worked great with my gsg16. No jams or double feeding. The box came a little dirty but nothing major.

This has been the only ammo my Sig P322 will consistently shoot. 975 rounds in a day with very few issues.

After only a few dozen rounds, I find this to be an excellent range and critter control ammo. No problems as yet. Look forward to using this shipment so I can go with another order. Oh, this order arrived as scheduled and in great condition.
