Bullet strength and bullet placement are key factors,. I wouldn’t recommend all 223 for big buck deer,. Only a few will do the trick ,. It takes a powerful vital hit to bring a buck down,. The penetration and shock wave is what’s needed to take the game down ,. Choose your caliber wisely ,.

I started hunting whitetail deer with my .270 3 years ago. I've taken 4 deer in that time. One at 180 yards with a liver shot. 1 at 100 yards with double lung shot. One at 60 yards double lung shot. One at 20 yards heart shot. It hasn't let me down yet, and I don't think it will. I shoot 130 grain winchester deer season xp through it every year, and will continue to do so. Once sighted in properly, this is a flat shooting round with great stopping power for NY whitetail deer.

Bought 2 box's of xp 130 grain for deer season this year. I did shoot a Buck at 250 yards and a Doe at 170 yards using this ammo. Both deer dropped in their tracks and I was impressed with the knock down power and accuracy of the loads. My problem with these shells is that between the 2 box's I bought I have now fired 27 of the 40 rounds and have had 3 shells jam in my gun, 1 of which was out in the field while hunting. Fortunately it would have been my 2nd shot if it was needed. My rifle is a brand new Tika bolt action. I have also fired Remington and Hornady rounds through this gun at the range with no problems. I have had no problems with Winchester ammunition in the past, but this problem seems to be a quality control issue at Winchester. Hopefully they can solve the problem as otherwise I like the ammunition. Will not more for at least awhile due to the above issues.

I'm 82 years old and have been hunting whitetail deer since the late 1950s. I've hunted with just about every factory load available as well as my own carefully concocted handloads. This year, I bought a few boxes of Winchester Deer Season XP .308 150gr. When I sighted in my favorite Browning BAR rifle, I couldn't believe the 0.6", 100yd groups. I just double-lung shot a buck at 60yds and he dropped dead in his tracks. This is the absolute best factory load I have ever used.
