History of Nosler Ammo
Nosler Ammunition History
It all started in 1946 when John Nosler was hunting moose with a .300 H&H. Despite hitting the moose squarely, his bullets failed to penetrate deeply enough to reach vital organs, resulting in a prolonged and painful death for the animal. Determined to create a bullet that would perform consistently regardless of game size or shot angle, Nosler developed a dual-core bullet that became the first Nosler Partition in 1948. On his next hunt, the moose was killed with a single shot, marking the birth of Nosler Ammunition.
Nosler Ballistics
In the mid-20th century, most jacketed bullets employed single lead alloy cores surrounded by single copper alloy jackets. Military full metal jacket rounds offered penetration but minimal expansion, while hunting rounds expanded but often failed to penetrate deeply. Nosler addressed this problem by designing a custom jacket with two distinct lead cores separated by a solid copper partition, allowing for expansion without sacrificing integrity at high velocities. This revolutionary design debuted in 1947, forever changing big game hunting.
Proprietary Nosler Calibers
Nosler's legacy includes five proprietary cartridges, each designed for specific needs:
- 22 Nosler: Introduced in 2017, this .22 caliber round offers 25% more case capacity than the .223 Remington and 300 feet per second greater velocity.
- 26 Nosler: Released in 2013, this 6.5mm cartridge leverages modern technology for higher velocity and flatter trajectories.
- 28 Nosler: A 7mm caliber round designed for weight-conscious hunters, offering performance akin to the 7mm Remington Ultra Magnum.
- 30 Nosler: Introduced in 2016, this .30 caliber round exceeds the velocity of a .300 Weatherby Magnum.
- 33 Nosler: This .338 caliber round delivers superior velocity compared to the .338 Lapua Magnum while burning less powder.
With the exception of the .22 Nosler, all these cartridges are modifications of a .404 Jeffery case.
Nosler Bullets: A History of Innovation
Nosler pioneered the impact extrusion method, producing bullets with concentric jackets ideal for versatility. This innovation led to the development of the Nosler Ballistic Tip in 2014, combining a polymer tip with aerodynamic design for hunting mid-sized game. Other notable products include the Nosler Solid Base, Partition-HG, Custom Competition, and AccuBond. These bullets have earned Nosler numerous awards, including the inaugural NRA Golden Bullseye Pioneer Award in 2007.
Nosler Rifles
Nosler's rifles originated as tools to test their ammunition but were not commercially available until 2005 with the release of NoslerCustom Limited Edition Rifles. These rifles combine efficient assembly techniques with hand craftsmanship to deliver exceptional quality at an affordable price. Today, Nosler offers a comprehensive suite of products, including bullets, brass, ammunition, and rifles, catering to serious sporting enthusiasts.
Nosler remains committed to innovation and qualit ensuring that every product meets the highest standards. Whether you're hunting, target shooting, or simply a firearms enthusiast, Nosler's legacy of excellence continues to deliver performance you can trust.

Tight, tight groups from my Weatherby with a 7.5” twist. Consistently less than an inch at 100 yards. If there’s a flier, I know it’s me, not the ammo.
