Overview of 22 Long Rifle (LR) Ammo

22 LR ammo is the most widely produced and popular cartridge in the United States. For more than 100 years, it has served the needs of hunters, sport shooters, law enforcement, and even the military. Based on the Flobert BB cap, 22 Long Rifle ammunition is the result of continuous improvement of the BB cap to meet the need for a cartridge with accuracy, low recoil, and low noise for many applications.

The 22 LR rimfire cartridge is used in many situations, from target shooting to plinking and small rodent control. It's comparatively inexpensive, widely available, and lighter to carry – making 22 LR ammo a fantastic choice for extended shooting sessions at the range, an extended hunting trip, or a long hike while hunting rabbits and squirrels.

For reliable performance across all these applications, many shooters choose CCI Mini Mag 22LR for its consistent feeding and accuracy.

Customer Reviews

  • CLL said:

These 22LR are clean firing, no duds, and no jams. Buy in bulk is the way to go.

  • Kev said:

Ammo is accurate and had zero issues running it through two different 22s.

  • CLL said:

I enjoy trying different ammo and the Armscor worked well with my Glock, Ruger and Volquartsen. Stellar service from ammo.com.

  • red-one said:

I have shot 4000 rounds thru Ruger 10/22, Ruger MK IV, Smith & Wesson auto pistol, M&P, 3 different 1911 22 pistols all automatic only had 3 fail to fire and 2 fail to feed total. I had no issues with running complete mags fast or slow fire drills. But like all 22 ammo, was a little dirty after the first 500 rds, but did not seem to affect the performance. For the price very dependable.

  • Gary said:

First 5000 I bought were of,poor quality. !3 out of 50 failure to fire in four different weapons. Sent back to factory, received 5000 replacements. Have fired 3000 +-throught a Marlin 60, Ruger 10/22. Browning Buckmark, Stevens 87H. One failure to fire. Cleanliness was as expected. Dontb think there is any .22 rimfire ammo that is really "clean".

  • Christopher said:

I got these thinking it was going to be great for my new Ruger 10/22 backed on reviews. However I was hugely disappointed. Ever round got hung up feeding one way or another. The only time it would successfully rack a round is when the bolt had enough force to shear off a part of the lead tip leaving large chunks behind. Out of 100 rounds used so far (of the 1000 bought :( I could not go though a full factory 10rd magazine without multiple failure to feeds. Would not recommend.. will not buy again.

  • David said:

Others that I have used tend to get hung up when ejecting. Every time I use these rounds they all eject perfectly.

  • Thomas L said:

First off, I cannot say enough nice things about the service given to me by ammo.com and I intend on buying as much ammo as I need from this seller. As far as the ammo itself goes, I fired all 500 rounds divided between 4 auto-loaders, 3 lever action and 3 bolt action rifles, all scoped and all from 105 measured yards at a range. I am very impressed with how clean this ammo shoots. I am a clean freak where firearms are concerned and it takes some doing to impress me where cleanliness is concerned on .22 ammo. As far as accuracy goes, for measured groups, I fired 4, 5 shot groups with each rifle. The average measurement of the bolt action rifles was 5/16 of an inch. The lever actions averaged 7/16 of an inch and the auto-loaders averaged 3/4 of an inch. I never had a single misfire out of the 500. I fired the ammo in 2 Henry and 1 Marlin lever action rifles. I fired the ammo in a 1937 Mossberg model 46A, a 1946 model Remington 510 Target Master and a 2013 Ruger model 77/22 - all 3 bolt guns. I fired the ammo in 2 Ruger 10/22 auto-loaders, 1 Marlin model 60 auto-loader and 1 Remington Nylon 66. Here is where my only complaint with this ammo lies. The ammo does not produce enough chamber pressure to cycle the bolts on these semi-auto rifles. They either stovepipe or fail to force the bolt back far enough to cycle the next round into the chamber. Again, I am a clean freak with my firearms and I remove the bolts and clean the entire receiver after each range/hunting session. I cannot say what the ammo will do in a semi-auto pistol as it has been nearly 20 years since I owned one and it was not worth my time to drive 50 miles to borrow a Buckmark from a friend.

Very happy with the ammo. My son ran probably 100 rounds through his Ruger 10/22 with out any jams. Had a problem in the past with the (big box store) ammo jamming up when using the large after market mags. Fast delivery as well. We'll be repeat customers for sure.

A lot of reviewers on different sites say this ammo is junk . I have a gsg 522 always used this ammo it's accurate ,no problem rapid fire auto feeding only issue after around 2000 rounds the gun needs a complete tear down to clean it is on the dirty side AMMO.COM is GREAT TO DEAL WITH

  • Fwank said:

Lots of duds, sometimes 3%+. Very inconsistent velocities if you chrono them, but you don't need a chrono to feel the difference in recoil from shot to shot, or hear the very different sound of the report from shot to shot. Expect lots of practice clearing every type of malfunction, failure to feed, failure to extract, failure to eject. And they're also really, really dirty. I have one .22 pistol that sometimes keyholes, but only with Automatch. It's just that bad. On the plus side, I get even more duds and even more malfunctions of every kind with Remington and Winchester bulk pack. Additionally I've never had a case head rupture or a split case with any Federal product. That's more than I can say for Winchester. I've even had case heads rupture with the expensive Winchester Super-X that comes in the plastic trays. Look, this is the cheap stuff. It's floor sweepings. You knew this going in. It's good enough for plinking, but keep a cleaning rod with you in case you get a dud stuck in the bore. You will get lots of practice clearing malfunctions. Maybe if you shoot them in a revolver or a manually operated repeating rifle they aren't so bad, but all my .22s are semiauto. Despite the name--hey Federal, is it a joke? it's not very funny--Automatch makes every one of them choke and puke, the 10/22, the Mk. III pistol, the Henry AR7, the Kel-Tec P17, every one of them. It's garbage. And I keep buying it, because I'm not going to buy the expensive stuff, not when all I do is plink, maybe practice some point-shooting.

Easy to order online. I get it 5-7 days; I live in NJ. Ammo always fires, no duds. I also like the history of the bullet and caliber, how it came to be. This is the only place I get my ammo from.

I can confirm the previous review. My Taurus will not feed them. I never had a problem with CCI. Yes, the square tip of the hollow point jams. But they also don't feed through the magazines consistently. And some get stuck in the barrel itself - as if they are not dimensionally consistent and the ones that jam are a little too wide. I have about 5,000 rounds that are useless. Really disappointed with the Winchester brand.

I've fired over 400 rounds through my new SigArms auto without a misfire. That has to be a record for me.

  • Ahmad said:

I got the 3330 rounds. Unfortunately didn't go well with my Taurus. Failure to feed likely because it's not round tip. The hollow point makes more likely to get stuck. Now I have tops of these that I don't know what to do with

Cheap, but dirty ammo. This ammo might go bang and might not. Accuracy is about 2 plus inches at 50 yards on a good day. Out of 50 rounds I get approx. 6 rounds that did not fire, half of them did fire on the second try. You get what you pay for.

  • manny said:

Recently received my second order of 5000 round lot. Shoots well through a revolver, semi-auto rifle, and semi-auto pistol. Outstanding value, very clean ammo, unlike Aguila, which was gummy and super dirty, causing failure to feeds. Very pleased with the ammo. I'd seen reviews in years past that were negative, but couldn't be happier with purchase.

  • BuzzedLightYears said:

I used to shoot this when I was a boy. A few decades later I tried it again, and a few more decades later, it hasn't changed. If you enjoy spending your time cleaning your iron, this won't disappoint, because it's the dirtiest, most filthy ammunition I've ever shot. I have one brick left from decades ago purchase and might use it when I run out of my other brands, but for my iron, I doubt I'll ever purchase any ever again. It gums up ALL my iron every time. It's my last choice desperate use ammunition, because of that. I've never found another brand that's as Dirty as the Remington .22 ammunition.

Bought a box and loaded 4 ten round magazines. Had 6 failures to fire in those 40 rounds. Unfired rounds had nice deep firing pin strikes. Turned a few over and tried again with no luck. Called the Winchester/Olin number on the box and a recording said to contact them on the website, then hung up. The website says they really want to help if you will just fill out this lengthy contract sheet. I guess this is the modern way some companies treat customers but for me it's the last Winchester product I'll buy.

This is CCI 22lr ammo so I would not expect the best and indeed CCI did not let me down. What did let me down was ammo.com's shipping department. Each of the 100 round was packed in standard CCI plastic slide top boxes and of the 5 boxes ALL 5 were cracked and or broken. The shipping box they came in looked okay shape, a couple of brused coners so the damage to the 22lr ammo had to have come from something internal, like the 3 boxes of Speer Lawman 38 Special Ammo - 50 Rounds of 125 Grain TMJ Ammunition and the 2 boxes of Hornady 357 Magnum Ammo - 25 Rounds of 135 Grain FTX Ammunition. I am pretty sure the 35 special and 357 magnum ammo was sloshing around inside the shipping container and hitting against each other as the 22lr ammo. The packing inside the shipping container was pretty minimal for that much weight and there should have been a lot more packing so nothing could move around. All the internal boxes need to be held ridgid. Don" feel bad, I have ordered ammo from other online companies with very simular results.

This form sucks. I bought a box of CCI BLAZER for $9.25 I bought a box of CCI PISTOL for $14.00 . This form list them both as CCI 22 LR Ammo, I don't know which one I am reviewing here. . The cheap Blazer worked great in all guns I tried including a 60 year old Montgomery Wards auto which jams on most brands. . I did not see any benefit to paying the extra $5 for the Pistol Match. Both could consistently hit a quarter at 25 yards.

I grew up in the 70 hurting with a Mossberg Model 351KA hurting squirrels with stinger's. I had very good luck. When I got in my early 20's I brought a Browning Buck Mark to take with me when I was deer hurting, because squirrels would to always come under your deer stand so at the end of the day I would use it for them. After a while I would hunt squirrels with the buck mark and stinger's, and at 61 I still use stinger's but I have upgraded to a Ruger Mark IV I got it because it is easier to clean. I also still have the Mossberg.
