One question I consistently get asked here at Ammo.com is this: “Is Norma ammo any good?” Although my answer is always a resounding affirmative, I thought it would be a good idea to take a moment to explain why Norma makes such high-quality ammo.

One of the best aspects of Norma precision ammo is how accurate it is. Shooters report that Norma ammo ignites clean, and feeds well with very few malfunctions. Norma Ammo History and Important Information

Norma was founded in 1902 by the Enger brothers: Lars, Johan, and Ivar. They founded L.A. Enger & Co upon purchasing an ammunition factory in Raufoss, Sweden, and later moved their operation to modern day Oslo.

There is a lot of confusion surrounding the naming of the company. Some have speculated that it is shorthand for Normandy, or “Norge” (which means “Norway” in Norwegian). In fact, Lars was a huge fan of the opera of the same name by Vincenzo Bellini, and convinced his brothers to name their business after it.

Norma quickly became the primary ammunition supplier to the Swedish shooting movement, and has consistently provided ammo to hunters and competitive shooters throughout Europe.

One historic accomplishment was that Norma Ammunition was the development of the boat tail spitzer projectile. Using the secret French Balle D projectile, ballistician Karl Wang and the Enger Brothers developed a process to consistently and uniformly apply a boat tails to bullets. This granted Norma’s bullet heightened aerodynamic efficiency, and an edge over other ammo manufacturers as a result.

Norma prioritized production of military ammunition through the first half of the 20th century. The company started focusing on big game hunting projectiles after WWII, introducing a wide variety of new products to the European hunting community.

Norma proceeded to forge strong connections with Nils Kvale and Roy Weatherby. Kvale manufactured several cartridges bearing the company’s name, most notably the 308 Norma Magnum and 358 Norma Magnum.

Norma was purchased by Beretta Holding Group in July, 2022. Prior to this, Norma had been a subsidiary of RUAG Ammotec, a Swiss-owned company. After acquiring it, Beretta renamed Norma Ammunition to Norma Precision Inc.

In November 2022, Beretta invested nearly $60 million into building a new ammunition production facility for Norma Precision in Savannah, Georgia. The 300,000 sq ft state-of-the-art facility will provide hundreds of jobs to the local community and cement Norma as a premier ammo company in the United States.

Norma now produces over 30 million rounds of ammunition each year in 110 different calibers.
