Overview of CCI Ammo

Founded in 1951 by Richard “Dick” Speer in Lewiston, Idaho, CCI (Cascade Cartridge, Inc.) emerged as a pioneer in ammunition manufacturing. Inspired by his brother Vernon Speer’s success with Speer Bullets, Richard applied his mechanical expertise to produce high-quality cases and primers, starting in a small space within his brother’s plant. Initially focused on serving reloaders and competitive shooters, CCI quickly became known for its innovative approach to ammunition production.

Growth and Innovation

In the early years, CCI faced material shortages stemming from World War II but excelled by producing non-corrosive, non-mercuric primers. The addition of Dr. Victor Jasaitis, a Lithuanian chemist and explosives expert, marked a turning point. Under his guidance, CCI developed superior primers and manufacturing processes, solidifying its position as an industry leader.

The farm-turned-factory in Lewiston became a hub for innovation, featuring modern laboratories and specialized manufacturing facilities. CCI’s commitment to quality was evident when their primers set a handloader accuracy record in 1955 and earned government contracts specifying their unique standards.

Key Products and Innovations

CCI introduced the world's first hypervelocity 22 LR ammo with its Stinger line, cementing its reputation for cutting-edge rimfire products:

Mini-Mag™: A popular rimfire cartridge known for reliability.
Velocitor™: The fastest 40-grain .22 LR load available.
Segmented Hollow Point and Silhouette: Advanced rimfire offerings.
Hypervelocity .22 Magnum Rimfire: Another first for CCI.

For shooters seeking an affordable yet reliable option for high-volume range sessions, CCI also produces the Blazer line. Designed specifically for plinking and target practice, CCI Blazer 22LR offers consistent performance at a budget-friendly price point, making it a popular choice for extended shooting sessions — stocking up with bulk 22 ammo keeps the cost per round as low as possible. Read our CCI Blazer 22LR review for detailed performance testing and comparisons with other CCI rimfire offerings. On the centerfire side, that same value-driven approach carries over to Blazer Brass ammo, offering reloadable brass-cased loads in popular pistol calibers like 9mm and 45 ACP. For the parent brand's own 9mm shelf, see our CCI 9mm ammo page.

These products, alongside improvements in primers, have made CCI a favorite among sport shooters, hunters, and reloaders. The CCI Mini Mag 22LR remains one of their most popular offerings for reliable performance. CCI also produces a well-regarded line of 17 HMR ammo, having been among the first manufacturers to support the cartridge after Hornady introduced it in 2002.

Commitment to Excellence

Today, CCI remains a cornerstone of the Lewiston community, employing over 1,000 people and operating cutting-edge facilities, including a 37,000-square-foot addition completed in 2017. This high-tech expansion focuses on .22-caliber rimfire ammunition production, designed by CCI’s in-house engineers for superior efficiency and quality.

In addition to providing top-notch ammunition, CCI actively supports the National Shooting Sports Foundation and engages in advocacy for the Second Amendment. Curious how their ammo holds up in real-world testing? Our CCI ammo review breaks down performance across their most popular lines.

Works well with my 22 pistol. Very reliable

This is CCI 22lr ammo so I would not expect the best and indeed CCI did not let me down. What did let me down was ammo.com's shipping department. Each of the 100 round was packed in standard CCI plastic slide top boxes and of the 5 boxes ALL 5 were cracked and or broken. The shipping box they came in looked okay shape, a couple of brused coners so the damage to the 22lr ammo had to have come from something internal, like the 3 boxes of Speer Lawman 38 Special Ammo - 50 Rounds of 125 Grain TMJ Ammunition and the 2 boxes of Hornady 357 Magnum Ammo - 25 Rounds of 135 Grain FTX Ammunition. I am pretty sure the 35 special and 357 magnum ammo was sloshing around inside the shipping container and hitting against each other as the 22lr ammo. The packing inside the shipping container was pretty minimal for that much weight and there should have been a lot more packing so nothing could move around. All the internal boxes need to be held ridgid. Don" feel bad, I have ordered ammo from other online companies with very simular results.

Love this ammunition! I fired over 1500 rounds through my S&W M&P AR 15-22 with only two rounds not ejecting completely. Your price is somewhat high as this ammo can be found elsewhere for around 50.00. It is your great service and timely shipping that keeps me coming back.

The ammo I purchase from you worked great. No jamming or misfires. I was completely satisfied. The value was ok, but considering the cost of shipping it wasn't that great. I don't do a lot of shooting so I would probably purchase again.

Best .22 ammo out there.

One in every 10 or 15 failed to fire. Not great, but I'm told for rimfire rounds that is normal. I expected more reliability given the price.

Have not popped a cap on one of this batch, but have shot a bunch of CCI ammo. Bulk is a great value (.08) and CCI is a quality brand. kw

CCI Standard Velocity: This ammunition handles it all. If your firearm experiences issues feeding or grouping with this load, the issue is almost certainly the gun itself, not the ammunition. It is highly recommended to buy it by the case. Ammo.com was fast and effiecient.

I'd hate to be on the receiving end !!

I grew up in the 70 hurting with a Mossberg Model 351KA hurting squirrels with stinger's. I had very good luck. When I got in my early 20's I brought a Browning Buck Mark to take with me when I was deer hurting, because squirrels would to always come under your deer stand so at the end of the day I would use it for them. After a while I would hunt squirrels with the buck mark and stinger's, and at 61 I still use stinger's but I have upgraded to a Ruger Mark IV I got it because it is easier to clean. I also still have the Mossberg.

I purchased a Savage A17 several years ago. 1st and only weapon of this calibre. Before buying what to me was a novelty rifle I did a lot of reading about the ammo. Savage, in their literature, says to use this ammo to feed this rifle. It has been engineered and tested to run in this gun. So I have exclusively. Never had a problem with weapon or ammo, other than the plastic "drum" magazine. If a manufacturer were to develop a metal mag it would sell out I imagine. I have no idea of other .17s, don't have any and never fired any. This ammo is so fast and flat that at 200y where you'd be expecting some drop it doesn't happen. So either zero at that distance or aim a little high. The reticles in your scope don't compensate for this round. As to pricing, CCI knows they have the market for this rifle, albeit there was a lot of testing to get a round that works consistently, I still think they're charging a bit more than they should/round.

This ammo is great and actually cycles well out of my SR .22 Winchester Wildcat. It doesn't cycle out of the Ruger 10/22 but that's OK because I got it for the Wildcat for shooting pests in my backyard. I have the Sparrow Surpresor on it and it's more quite than a Benjamin pellet gun. Very accurate at 40 yards and it puts birds to sleep instantly. Great product!

Bullet Points: CCI Ammo

Richard "Dick" Speer's experience as a machinist at Boeing Aircraft's Seattle plant gave him a talent for all things mechanical – including the ability to produce quality cases.
Speer Ammunition began in a small room of the Speer Bullets plant in 1951, which was owned by Richard's brother.
With the intention of building primers for hobby reloaders, Speer went on to create non-corrosive and non-mercuric sporting cartridges for reloaders.
The Stinger was the world's first hypervelocity .22 Long Rifle ammo.
