Underwood Ammunition For Sale
Overview of Underwood Ammunition
Nearly every cartridge in the American catalog is loaded below what it was designed to do. Manufacturers build to the middle of the pressure envelope because it is safer across the widest range of firearms, easier on tooling, and cheaper to insure. The 10mm Auto is the most famous casualty of that logic, downloaded so far from Jeff Cooper's original spec that a new cartridge, the 40 S&W, was carved out of the compromise. Underwood exists because a segment of shooters never accepted the trade.
The Illinois loader has built its entire identity on loading to the top of spec and, where an accepted standard exists for it, past it. That shows up three different ways across the catalog: monolithic solid copper defensive bullets that cut rather than expand, hard cast lead loads built for straight-line penetration in the woods, and conventional jacketed hollow points driven considerably faster than the factory equivalent.
Three families, three jobs
- Xtreme Defender and Xtreme Penetrator: machined solid copper with cutting flutes instead of a hollow cavity. They do not expand, so they do not have a velocity threshold to fail below. Lighter than jacketed bullets of the same profile because copper is less dense than lead.
- Hard cast: lead alloyed for hardness and cast with a wide flat nose. No expansion, maximum penetration through bone and hide. This is the woods and bear-country side of the catalog.
- JHP and XTP: conventional expanding bullets, including Hornady's XTP, loaded hotter than the factory version of the same projectile.
- Know your pressure labels. SAAMI publishes a +P standard for some cartridges and none at all for others, and there is no SAAMI +P+ standard for any of them. Check what your firearm is rated for before running high-pressure ammunition through it.

The first choice I have for .38 ammo for personal protection in a carry revolver. It hits shockingly hard, gel tests show it going very deep, and its both extremely loud and can shoot some big fire balls out the sides of your gun which is going to scare the shit out of all but the most persistent problem on two or four legs.

Other guy whining would like to see higher than 90 grain...well this is 99.5%+ Cu or "copper"...it is not as dense as lead and thus does not have the same weight or grain to it. As good as it gets for what it is, unless you're going to have a longer bullet or wider bullet, there really isn't anyway to add more weight to it...it its a 9x19mm and that's all the weight/grain it will ever have being made of copper.

Overall a great product, pricey but unique. unlike others have been tried, these are true to purpose. I would like to see a higher grain than 90 for this ammo.

This ammo is more consistent, accurate, and powerful than 10mm range ammo. I was amazed at how well I shot out of my Glock 20 Gen 5. My confidence that I can employ this ammo for bear defence has grown significantly. It feeds and cycles without issue.

Awesome stuff. These Hard Cast rounds really penetrate. In fact in out did my 357mag in a ballistic gel block. The 10mm penetrated a full 4 inches more than my 357mag.. I will be getting several more boxes of these hard cast rounds...
