Underwood Ammunition built its reputation on a simple premise: most factory ammunition is loaded well below what the cartridge is actually capable of. The Illinois company has spent more than a decade loading to the top of spec and beyond, and 380 ACP is one of the calibers where that philosophy makes the biggest practical difference.

The reason comes down to the problem every 380 shooter eventually runs into. Conventional jacketed hollow points need velocity to expand, and a 2.7 inch pocket pistol barrel does not generate much of it. A 90 grain JHP leaving the muzzle at 850 fps is right at the edge of opening reliably. Underwood attacks that from two directions at once: higher pressure to push velocity up, and monolithic solid copper bullets that do not depend on expansion in the first place. The Xtreme Defender design uses machined flutes rather than a hollow cavity, displacing tissue hydraulically as it drives forward, which sidesteps the velocity threshold entirely.

Before you buy Underwood 380

• There is no SAAMI +P standard for 380 ACP. Unlike 9mm or 38 Special, the industry has never published a +P pressure spec for this cartridge. Ammunition sold as +P 380 is loaded above standard pressure without a standardized ceiling.
• Check what your pistol is rated for. Small 380s are lightweight by design, and some are simple blowback actions where higher pressure means higher slide velocity and more battering. Consult your manufacturer before running high-pressure loads through a pocket gun.
• Monolithic bullets weigh less. Copper is less dense than lead, so a solid copper 380 bullet in the same profile lands in the 65 to 90 grain range rather than 90 to 100. Lighter bullet, higher velocity, different recoil impulse than you may be used to.
• Feed-test everything. The bullet profiles Underwood uses are not the round-nose shapes most 380 feed ramps were designed around. Run a full magazine before you carry it.
