History of PMC Ammo

The Poongsan Corporation of South Korea was established in 1968, and is known for working nonferrous metals including copper, titanium and others. In 1973, the Angang ammo plant was established as Precision Made Cartridges (PMC) to provide South Korea with all their own ammo needs. But business was so good, that production overruns bearing the PMC name were soon being sold on the open market. Proud to manufacture nearly all components for making ammunition, PMC uses this approach to establish standards and maintain strict quality control through the entire process.

PMC Ammo Company

Like many high-quality ammunition manufacturers around the world, PMC is fully vertically integrated. This means that every piece made by PMC cartridges has been fully manufactured from start to finish by PMC, with the primary advantage of vertical integration being quality control. PMC never takes parts from other manufacturers they have no control over, but instead they assemble using their own parts.

Every piece of a PMC round has been quality controlled at every step of the way, leading to a superior ammunition line. This includes the brass mills where all the brass for PMC ammunition is made. What’s more, when shortages occur, as they inevitably do, the in-house brass supplier doesn’t have to wait for an outside manufacturer to get up and running.

The proof is in the pudding. PMC enjoys some of the top-notch certifications in the ammunition industry – including Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute (SAAMI) and United States Military Standards and Specifications (US MIL-STD and US MIL-SPEC). PMC is also one of the few ammunition manufacturers to enjoy ISO Bureau Veritas quality control standards certification. This consistency of quality is what makes bulk ammo purchases from PMC ammo so reliable.

The PMC ammo company loads new brass cases with boxer primers. In line with SAAMI standards, this ammunition is non-corrosive. Every piece of ammunition manufactured by PMC is reloadable, which will thrill many amateur bulletsmiths. What’s more, every cartridge that comes out of PMC is submitted to the same stringent quality control standards that their military ammunition goes through. If it’s not good enough for the military, it’s not good enough for you.

The Poongsan Corporation actually operates two different plants dedicated to the production of military-grade ammunition. One is in Angang and the other is at Busan. Both make PMC 5.56 ammo – and much more. Other armaments manufactured in Busan and Angang include eight-inch Howitzer projectives, tank guns and anti-aircraft guns. The defense wing of Poongsan is also vertically integrated and ISO9000-2000 certified. Poongsan first received permission to manufacture military-grade armaments in the early 1970s, which helped the Republic of Korea move toward a self-sufficient military.

While most of its military ammunition goes straight to the Korean military, its commercial ammunition is overwhelmingly sold on the international market.

The company has a decades-long presence in the United States. This was the company’s first expansion outside of Asia. Its first foothold in the United States was PMX Industries in Cedar Rapids, IA, in 1992. Poongsan America was later established in Los Angeles in July 2002, and then PMC Ammunition in Texas in December 2013. The quality on both sides of the Pacific Ocean is the same, however. And while the American branch tends to focus on older American cartridges, the Korean branch focuses more on modern military ammunition. If you want to know where your ammunition was manufactured, United States law requires that all ammunition manufacturers stamp the nation of origin right on the box.

PMC and the Korean War

PMC was founded after the end of hostilities in the Korean War. However, the Korean War, as any precocious high schooler knows, never actually ended. A ceasefire was put into place, but a peace treaty was never signed. This means that both Koreas are always on a war footing at all times. Even democratic South Korea has universal male conscription. Celebrities and other well-heeled Koreans who avoid or attempt to avoid service are committing career suicide. Korean-American pop singer Steve Yoo was banned from the country for attempting to evade service by abandoning his Korean citizenship. South Korea does not recognize the right of conscientious objectors.

The Korean War figures heavily into the beginnings of PMC. South Korea was looking for a way to become more self-sufficient with its armaments. Fortunately for PMC, there were mountains of brass left behind by the United States military and its allies from the days of active combat in Korea. A lot of PMC 9mm ammo cases were crafted from 105mm artillery shells, and the Poongsan Corporation is well aware of this heritage. It honored 507 Iowa veterans with a monument in Cedar Springs, where its American headquarters are located. PMC has supplied ammunition for all four Korean republics since its founding in 1968.

This means that PMC ammunition was used during the Korean DMZ Conflict, also known as the Second Korean War. This was a series of border skirmishes between the two Koreas. While little known in the United States, it resulted in 43 dead American soldiers over the course of three years. While there have been isolated skirmishes since then, the Korean peninsula has been at relative peace since 1969.

PMC Brand Ammo

When consumers buy PMC brand ammo today, it's no longer just surplus ammunition. The product line, as well as the selection of calibers they offer, has expanded to address many diverse shooting needs in addition to the South Korean military. PMC produces more than just 5.56 ammo and 9mm cartridges to include manufacturing non-military calibers like .44 Magnum. Full metal jacket bullets are the standard for military ammunition around the globe, and PMC produces some of the best there is. Their product line, however, also includes ammo for hunters, competitive shooters, and people who want ammo for self defense and personal protection.

PMC makes High Velocity Magnum hunting loads that shotgunners will appreciate, plated with copper and carried in cups designed to deliver dense patterns with uniformity for maximum performance.

They also sell a wide variety of high-quality competition, hunting and personal protection ammunition. They have earned a stellar reputation for quality and affordability, and will likely continue to be a significant presence in the ammunition market for many years.

Popular PMC Cartridges

Quality and consistency – these are the two ingredients to PMC’s success. The company boasts five different brands of ammunition: Bronze, eRange, X-TAC, X-TAC Range and Starfire. These brands are differentiated by the following characteristics:

  • Bronze: This line is primarily for paper-punching and plinking in your backyard. The rounds are designed with the casual shooter in mind who demands performance. With that said, the rounds are also of a superior quality for law enforcement, hunting and self defense. For more ammo options, visit our PMC 40 Cal ammo page.
  • eRange: Whether you’re shooting indoors or just want to shoot green, there’s eRange. This brand focuses on eliminating lead and other airborne-heavy metals during shooting. eRange cartridges likewise boast reduced burn residue for both firearms and brass casing. This makes it a perfect solution for shooters with home ranges with limited ventilation.
  • Starfire: There are no two ways about it: Starfire is a lethal round. The average penetration is a whopping nine to 14 inches. This is made possible by a patented rib-and-flute design paired with a deep hollow point cavity that expands to twice its diameter upon impact. It’s a popular brand for hunting big game with a handgun for this reason.
  • X-TAC: This line is designed with precisely one purpose in mind – self defense. That’s as true for a civilian customer as it is for law enforcement officers. PMC doesn’t want you to be thinking about your ammunition, whether you’re defending your family or your community while on the job.
  • X-TAC Match: As the name implies, X-TAC Match is an ammunition brand for competitive shooters who demand the very best from their cartridges. PMC doesn’t just want X-TAC to be the best sporting ammunition – it wants to raise the bar for the entire industry.

Some of the more popular PMC cartridges include:

  • PMC 223 Ammo: The PMC bronze .223 round is a Rem auto round with 55 grain PMC bullets, popular for loading up the AR-15. Pick up 1000 rounds today.
  • PMC 308 Ammo: The PMC .308 ammo rifle round is actually the commercial round from which the NATO 7.62x55mm was developed. In civilian life, it’s a common hunting round.
  • PMC 45 Auto: This .45 auto ammunition from PMC only comes in a full metal jacket variation.
  • PMC 7.62x39 Ammo: Both the 7.62x39mm and the 762x51mm round are popular hunting rounds. The latter is available in spam cans.

Unfortunately, there is no PMC shotgun ammo. So if you’re in the market for PMC shotgun shells, you’re going to come up short. With that said, PMC makes just about any other kind of round you could possibly need.

Service and shipping is top-rate with these folks.

  • Roger9019 said:

I have shot about 100rds through my springfield M1A. The build is still in process but initial accuracy on this ammo is around 2 to 3 MOA which should be expected from range/milsurp ammo. The cost was very good, I like that it came with a can as well- 308 is heavy! I also like the timely delivery and I will be shopping again when my ammo budget is restored!

  • ccw4ohio said:

For reliability I'd rate it 3 out of 5. Several rounds had to be smacked 2-3 times before they ignited. I think PMC is still using those hard primers that made me steer away from the Starfire line. Accuracy was 5 out of five. Affordability was 3 out of five. Yes, you guys delivered just like you said, but the shipping cost was much more than I expected. I might have to run a few more boxes through for another reliability test. The load was totally controllable out of a S&W Model 29 "Dirty Harry" signature .44 Magnum, 6.5 in bbl., target was set at 21-25 ft.

  • Freakazoid said:

This ammo is very consistent. Bench firing my Sako .223 I can put three consecutive rounds in a nickle at 100 yds. Love this ammo!

The ammo itself LOOKS beautiful compared to Lake City penetrators but I have not shot it yet so I can't comment on that. I paid more per round, but that is just the market, not Ammo.com.

  • Bigthiss said:

Great ammunition for the price. I used to buy the federal loose bulk ammo in 500 and 1000 but there were always at least 10-20 that were either faulty loads or misfired. This ammo is hands down the best for the price that I have purchased and shot. Highly recommend!!

A small shop by me sells this cheaper than anywhere else… Excellent components & no cutting corners for PMC. Excellent brass for reloading. Most accurate & reliable factory .308 you will find - with the right setup & shooter, you should have no issue driving 1” groups every 100 meters. Have fun & remember firearms safety is 100% on us.

Bought a case and 2 days later it was delivered. Was disappointed in the shot group from a M1A1, however was pleased when shooting it from an H&K 91. Shot a total of 60 rounds with out any issues of cycling or misfires. As for carbon residue, nothing out of the ordinary. Will order another case for my H&K to kill more golf balls at 100 yards.

This is decent steel cored M33 ball equivalent. Chronoed at 2875fps out of a 30” barrel. 2” groups at 100yds. Still fantastic and affordable ammo for 1000+ yard shooting and practice.
