Overview of Sellier & Bellot Ammo

Established in 1825, Sellier & Bellot is one of the oldest continuously operating ammunition companies in the world. Based in the Czech Republic, S&B is renowned for its high-quality ammo, serving both military and civilian markets. The brand is now owned by CBC, which also manages the Magtech ammunition brand.

The Beginnings of Sellier & Bellot

Louis Sellier and Jean Maria Bellot partnered to revolutionize ammunition production in the early 19th century. Their innovative process allowed for mass production of percussion caps, lowering ammunition costs and setting a new standard for quality. By the mid-1800s, Sellier & Bellot was one of the largest ammunition manufacturers in Europe, producing millions of primers annually.

Expanding into Modern Ammunition

S&B introduced rimfire and centerfire cartridges in the late 19th century, eventually adding a wide range of military and hunting ammunition. During WWI and WWII, the company shifted focus to supply military-grade ammunition. Post-war, they expanded commercial lines to include over 85 different cartridges for pistols, rifles, and shotguns.

    I have used this in a Burgsmuller drilling for years with complete satisfaction. Not only on whitetail deer in the USA, but on several species in Africa, and on an enormous feral hog. All one-shot kills. Paper ballistics are not indicative of the effectiveness of this round. The 196-grain bullet kills like a bolt of lightning.

    Have killed whitetails very efficiently with this cartridge. Longest shot was 250 yards and that out of a Christoph Funk drilling! Long, deep penetrating and accurate in every drilling/combo gun I have tried it in. Cheap for what it is, too! Have stopped shopping around for other versions since this is so affordable and easy to get.

    The diameter on the brass end of the shells is too large. So it has to be forced into the cylinder a bit. Upon firing (I was playing with a S&W Governor) the shell expands further, so it backs out of the charging hole and locks up the cylinder. Then, you have to deal with extracting a shell that is far too large for the hole (obligatory giggety). It's a nightmare to shoot if you can shoot it at all. Hopefully I just got a bad batch. Regardless I will never purchase this stuff again . . . Couldn't give it away.

    I use this ammo in my combination guns and love it. I recently have had a Borchardt Single shot rifle rebarreled in this cartridge with a 28" octagon to round barrel.     I shot a bunch of Federal, Sig Sauer, but my AR really liked this stuff out at 100 yards. The Sig performed well too. The Federal was all over the place. I was shooting light grains. Good clean quality accurate ammo. The price is great too.
