Overview of Winchester Ammo
Winchester Repeating Arms is one of the most recognized names in the firearms world, celebrated for its lever-action rifles, bolt-action rifles, and shotguns. Known as "the gun that won the West," Winchester firearms have played a pivotal role in American history, from the Civil War to the World Wars and beyond.
A Storied History
Winchester's story began with the Henry rifle during the Civil War, which became renowned for its reliability. This success led to the formation of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, introducing innovations like the lever-action rifle and centerfire cartridges. Over the years, iconic models like the Model 1873, Model 1894, and the Model 70 became household names among hunters, soldiers, and shooting enthusiasts.
Winchester Innovations
- Model 1866: The first Winchester lever-action rifle, used in wars from the Franco-Prussian War to the Siege of Plevna.
- Model 1873: Known as "the gun that won the West," chambered for the innovative .44-40 cartridge.
- Model 1894: One of the most popular hunting rifles of all time, manufactured until 2006 and reintroduced in 2011.
- M1 Garand & M1 Carbine: Key rifles during WWII, contributing to Winchester's wartime resurgence.
- .308 Winchester: Introduced in the 1950s, this cartridge remains one of the most influential in the industry.
Challenges and Resilience
Despite innovations, Winchester faced challenges due to rising labor costs and economic downturns. The company transitioned to employee ownership in 1980, becoming U.S. Repeating Arms. While its historic New Haven plant closed in 2006, the Olin Corporation retains the Winchester trademark for ammunition, ensuring the brand's legacy continues.
Modern Winchester Ammunition
Today, Winchester offers a wide range of ammunition for hunters, sport shooters, and self-defense enthusiasts. Their popular lines include traditional Winchester Super-X 12 Gauge ammo, the ever-popular Winchester 9mm ammo, and modern options like the AccuBond CT and PDX1 Defender. On the defensive side of that 9mm shelf, Winchester 9mm hollow point ammo gathers the 115 and 147 grain JHP loads, Silvertip included.
Among Winchester's most popular modern offerings is their USA line of 5.56 NATO ammunition, commonly known as "White Box" among shooters. This affordable, brass-cased training ammunition has become a staple for AR-15 owners who need reliable performance for high-volume range sessions without premium pricing. Our Winchester 5.56 White Box review provides in-depth testing results on reliability, accuracy, and overall performance.
Popular Winchester Ammunition
- Winchester .32 Special: A favorite among handloaders and hunters of medium-sized game.
- Winchester 9x23mm: Designed for competition shooting but remains a niche option.
- Winchester .300 Win Mag: Highly accurate and powerful, ideal for large-game hunting at long distances.
Explore Winchester Ammo
Winchester continues to adapt and innovate in the firearms and ammunition industries. Their commitment to quality and history of resilience ensure they remain a trusted name for shooters worldwide. Browse our selection of Winchester 223 ammo and other popular calibers today!
Winchester also played a key role in standardizing the .22-250 cartridge in 1965, bringing factory-loaded ammunition to varmint hunters who had been handloading this popular wildcat for decades.
Winchester also shaped the 410. Its three-inch shell, introduced in 1933, opened the door to heavier payloads, and our Winchester 410 ammo runs from #9 birdshot to 000 buck and PDX1 defense loads.

I SHOT AROUND 250 ROUNDS AT THE RANGE AND HAD NO PROBLEMS AT ALL.

I've heard of bad batches but never witnessed any with 10k rounds bought. I run this is all my plinking guns with no barrel fouling, and just the occasional failure to fire due to bad primer (~1/300). Pistol, rifle or revolver all take this as well as minimag at around .02$ less per round. I'll take a box of 500 and run through it at the range. Runs cleaner than most 22 I've fired too.

I am surprised that Ammo.com is even trying to sell this ammo, winchester has 7 lots on their recall list, with others that I have had issues with. The ammo has issues with overloads in powder. Had one round that ruined my ruger Sr 22. Due to the overloaded round going off in the gun. Strong enough that it blows apart the rimfire from the casing.

Good value based .22LR. Couple of misfires per 100 rounds but could have been losing based or gun.

Was excited to receive shipment. Upon visit to range liberally 1 out of 3 bullets would jam or just not fire at all. Thank God i keep better ammo for protection.

Brought this 1000 round bundle. Took to the range. LITERALLY after every 2 or 3 shots it would get jammed and not fire. Loaded magazines 6 different times and same issue every single time.

This ammo was of poor quality and it underperformed. I had on average 3-to-4 rounds per 100 that either didn’t fire at all after 3 recycles or else fired after recycling; it appears to be a quality control issue with the rimfire primers. I use a very reliable handgun. The overall accuracy was also sub-par compared to other brands of “best value” .22 rimfire ammo I have used. I won’t purchase this Winchester M 22 ammo again.

I recently purchased a Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 in order to get the functionality of the AR platform all while using ammo that I can not just afford but really enjoy shooting with. The M&P 15-22 is basically an AR15 just scaled down to a .22LR cartridge, all of the classic AR functionality still exists and works, no "fake" switches or levers here, it operates very much the same as your average AR just with .22LR so you can not only shoot all day but enjoy it too at a fraction of the price you would if you were shooting 5.56 I absolutely love the rifle and Ammo.com is the best place to get high quality bulk ammo at the best available prices. I plan on continuing to use them to stock up so I can spend more time at the range and less time worrying about affording ammo.

If you look at the 3rd picture (sure wish I did before I purchased) you will see how filthy the cases are and how poorly aligned the bullets are. I can tell you the boxes I got are at least that bad. Wish I had paid a few bucks more for something better. My Sig P322 has a 20%+ failure rate with this trash. It does better in my Smith & Wesson MP 15-22, but still not great. Maybe in a revolver or bolt action it might not suck so bad for plinking?

Got a varmint problem on the farm. Now I have less of a problem. Loading into a smith and Wesson 22cal Hammond gun. 10 round clip. No jamming. No miss fires. Will buy again.

All of the rounds in the 555 box had spinning bullets loosely crimped. The results are erratic velocity readings and failures to load and eject. I am very fearful of getting a squib. I shoot a Taurus TX 22. I will save this stuff for my single action Ruger single six revolver where I can shoot slowly and react to a misfire or squib unlike shooting quickly in a semi auto.

Rounds poorly made. Bullets spin and bend inside casing. CCI rounds are rock solid by comparison. These rounds jam frequently, have multiple duds per magazine, and are generally unreliable. Not happy with my purchase and will not ever purchase again.

I've used Winchester rounds in other calibers and never been disappointed by them, and I can say the same for these 5.56 rounds. Excellent training rounds, good pricing, and I've had no issues with the first 450 rounds I've used so far.

The rounds were dirty, with some having excess powder or some kind of processing oil/grease on them. A few boxes had 18/19 rounds in them. Worked well in my rifle after 500 rounds so far and were a good price.

RONALD said:
No surprise here but the price per round shows as 63.8 cents. With shipping and sales tax, that easily went to about 85 cents. I did receive it in a timely fashion and it was well-padded in a cardboard box but would have preferred different packing from the factory. My error. A range pack means loose rounds inside a box. The ammo itself is so-so for its intended purpose. I also purchased Belom 7.62x39 (no longer available here) and cannot address ammo quality yet, but the factory packaging (20 rounds per PLASTIC case) was phenomenal.

Shoots amazing accurate and plenty of knock down power for plucking down rodents such as ground hogs . You can reach out and touch something with accuracy and confidence .

This stuff is cheap, and I value that. The last 4 boxes I bought are super dirty and not polished like it is 40 year old military surplus. You can see the annealing, and it looks like it came out of an ammo can 40 yrs ago . The consistency is all over the place and I wonder why.

Jack said:
I have always put M193 as offensive/defensive ammo, which is why I purchased it in the first place. I tested 80 rounds at 25, 50, 100, and 300 yards with a Sig M400, it was dead on accurate.
