Overview of 45 ACP Hollow Point Ammo
The 45 ACP never needed speed. John Browning designed it around a heavy, wide bullet moving at subsonic velocity, and a modern hollow point builds on that by starting at .45 caliber and expanding from there. Most standard 230 grain loads leave a 5 inch 1911 at 850 to 900 fps. They're quiet next to a 9mm, suppressor-friendly, and push more like a shove than a snap.
This is one of our deepest hollow point selections. 230 grain is the clear center of mass, 185 grain covers shooters who want more velocity and a flatter trajectory, and the in-between weights (165, 200, 210, and 220 grain) fill the gaps. About a quarter of the page is +P, for shooters who want more energy out of compact carry guns.
Three paths to 45 ACP terminal performance
- Classic 230 grain JHP: Federal, Remington, Winchester, Speer Gold Dot, and Fiocchi all load the traditional weight. It feeds reliably in nearly every 1911 and duty pistol.
- Lighter, faster 185 to 200 grain: Hornady XTP and FTX, plus Remington's 185 grain Golden Saber, trade some bullet weight for velocity and recoil control.
- Engineered and solid copper: Federal HST and Hydra-Shok Deep, Speer Gold Dot G2, and Barnes TAC-XPD go after consistent penetration through barriers.
Older 1911s can be picky about wide-mouth hollow points, so run a few magazines before you carry.

This is great ammo for Self Defense, this will get the job done. Using solid guns like Kimber in 45 & 10mm, I was able to achieve a level of accuracy at 25 yards with this ammo that I haven't been able to do since my Army days. Firing many 3 round groups at 25 yards, All shots could fit inside the circumference of a Quarter, actually the shots on the target touched and overlapped each other, nice mushrooms, 0 malfunctions and seeing some expand to over an inch, I decided to change over and make this my first "go to" ammo. Okay, first I will just say I ordered one thousand rounds after doing multiple different tests on this round. I found it to expand over .85" with the biggest one expanding just over an inch. Out of all the premium rounds and the generic rounds on the market for non-bonded hollow points in 45, this had the best performance every....single...time. Not to mention it has light recoil. I found its recoil to be on par with steel cased wolf or tulammo. It fed smooth in my glocks, 1911s and even in my tommy gun. I say buy it. Get it and thank ammo.com for this terrific product. In a 50 round box, I found that these actually perform much better than the ammo I was trained on. I know my training ammo was just “ target ammo”…but there is a big difference between the two. This will be my stock up self defense ammo for certain.
