History of Barnes Ammunition

Fred Barnes founded his company, Barnes Bullets, in 1932. The company has since earned a solid reputation as a leader within the ammunition industry with its bullets for rifles. Barnes manufactures bullets for practically every caliber in production, and they sell their fair share of custom creations also, making it a company with a bullet for hunters and serious shooters in every situation they might have.

Fred Barnes' first innovation was the introduction of a copper jacketed bullet. This bullet performed better both in penetration tests and expansion tests when compared to other 1930's bullets in production. Barnes began large scale manufacturing soon after these tests, and grew to be the biggest custom bullet manufacturer in the US.

The company expanded to more than 100 employees by the 1940's, but the company shrank through the 1960's. The company changed its name to Colorado Custom Bullets, at which point there were only two employees. Randy and Coni Brooks bought the remains of the company in 1974, and with Fred Barnes' help, began rebuilding Barnes Bullets. Randy Brooks had contacts in the Safari Club International and he was committed to have firsthand experience with the performance of his products in the field. Randy was intent to demonstrate to global hunters that his bullets were the best on the market. Brooks spent 100 days per year hunting with his bullets. He also shared the testimonials of satisfied Safari Club members who had used his bullets for hunting, and Barnes Bullets grew to again be a major name in the ammunition industry by the late 1980's.

Randy Brooks developed his idea of an expanding bullet made entirely of copper in 1985. The bullet came to be called the "X-bullet," as the bullet splits into the shape of an X upon impact. Many bullets of the Barnes line today are based on this X-bullet from thirty years ago. Barnes bullets today are manufactured in nearly every caliber for rifles in use, and the company continues to improve their products years after year. Barnes bullets have won World Records for their accuracy, and many major manufacturers including PMC, Sako and Lazzeroni use their bullets. The ground breaking X-bullet is available to shooters in many different configurations, the three most popular designs being Triple Shock, Tipped Triple Shock, and XPB.

Looking forward, Barnes is developing their ammo lines for personal defense, police and military applications. The TAC-XPD line is renowned for deep penetration, excellent expansion and great weight retention. Barnes provides a variety of bullet types for the military which are classified, but the public does know about the Reduced Ricochet Limited Penetration (RRLP) bullet which is designed for warfare in urban environments.

Barnes today is still an innovator and continues to offer more and more products while maintaining the quality for which they're known. Shooters around the globe appreciate and value Barnes' excellent products. The Brooks family is committed to provide superior bullets, making it likely that Barnes Bullets will remain a premier manufacturer of bullets for years to come.
