For this Federal Punch 22 WMR review, I headed to my gun range and used two drastically different firearms to test the ammo’s reliability, accuracy, and recoil. This article is intended to help you decide if Federal Punch 22 WMR is the right self-defense ammo for you, or if you should use something else.

Is Federal Punch 22 WMR a Good Choice?

Federal Punch 22 WMR is a good choice of self-defense ammo for a backup gun because it’s reliable, accurate, and packs a punch (pun intended) for a rimfire cartridge.

I’m not a fan of using a firearm chambered in 22 WMR as my primary firearm for several reasons, but it makes an excellent backup option. One reason I prefer a 9mm or 45 ACP is that 22 WMR can’t inflict the wound cavity that the larger rounds can and do. It also doesn’t always have enough energy to quickly stop a threat by penetrating deeply enough to damage vital organs.

What Is Federal Punch 22 WMR Intended For?

Federal Punch 22 WMR is designed for self-defense. While testing it at the range, I didn’t experience any malfunctions or failures to fire: a testament to Federal Premium’s high-quality components. The nickel-plated brass cases easily slid out of the cylinder of my tiny North American Arms revolver and also cycled flawlessly through my old Mossberg bolt-action rifle.

While I wasn’t very accurate with the petite revolver, that’s no fault of the ammunition. Once I loaded it in my rifle, I was driving tacks with iron sights at 25 yards ( self-defense scenarios typically play out within that range).

One thing that surprised me was how much punch the nickel-plated lead-core bullet has. I shot a reactive target. Each hit would send the rolling cube a couple of feet, despite minimal accompanying recoil. Speaking of recoil, I hardly noticed it in the rifle, and it was very manageable while I was firing the tiny derringer.

Federal Punch 22 WMR Ammo Use Case Scores

This is how I would rate Federal Punch 22 WMR ammo based on its intended use case and key factors such as price, reliability, bullet design, accuracy, and recoil.

Target Practice 2/10
Competition Shooting 4/10
Self-Defense 8/10

Pros & Cons of Federal Punch 22 WMR Ammo

These are the benefits and drawbacks I discovered during my test of Federal Punch 22 WMR with a revolver and a bolt-action rifle.

Pros Cons
Trusted Brand Expensive for rimfire ammo
Reliable
Accurate
Powerful for rimfire ammo

I've used Federal Premium ammunition for decades and have typically had very positive experiences. I expect Federal to make high-quality ammo, and Punch 22 WMR did not disappoint.

While at the range with Federal Punch 22 WMR, I didn’t have a single failure to fire (FTF) or malfunction in either of my firearms. I can confidently say it's reliable.

I found these rounds to be reasonably accurate with my derringer at close range (I’m not the most accurate shooter with the tiny handgun) and very accurate with the bolt-action rifle.

While the 22 WMR wouldn’t be my top choice of self-defense ammo, Federal Punch does an admirable job of squeezing as much stopping power into the rimfire round as possible. However, that power doesn’t mean that it has a lot of recoil. It’s still 22 WMR, after all. I would much rather have this ready to go than nothing while defending myself or my family.

Federal Punch is a little pricey, but that’s to be expected of self-defense ammo. It’s not the most expensive 22 WMR ammo, but it’s much costlier than target ammo.

How Does Federal Punch 22 WMR Compare to Other Ammo?

Federal Punch compares favorably to other brands and ammo I've used in this price range for self-defense and hunting.

Ammo Price Reliability Cleanliness Recoil
CCI VNT Less Good Clean Same
Hornady Critical Defense Less Good Clean Same
Winchester Super-X Less Good Reasonable Same
Remington Premier AccuTip Less Good Reasonable Same
Speer Gold Dot Less Good Clean Same

Parting Shots: Federal Punch 22 WMR Review

After taking Federal Punch 22 WMR ammo to the range, I would purchase it from Ammo.com. I found it to be reasonably priced, ultra-reliable, and accurate during my test. It cycled through my old Mossberg bolt-action without a problem, and I believe it is good ammo for the North American Arms revolver I carry for backup.
