I’ve listened to many of my law enforcement buddies rant and rave about Speer Gold Dot for years, so I finally broke down and tested some Speer Gold Dot 9mm in my Smith & Wesson M&P Shield.

I headed to my backyard range to battle angry watermelons and test if the reliability and accuracy of these rounds are as good as all my buddies claimed. This Speer Gold Dot 9mm review is honest thoughts and opinions from that day.

I tested Speer Gold Dot 124 grain ammo, but it’s also available in 115 grain and 147 grain. As you would expect, the 147 grain has a lower velocity at the barrel (985 fps) than the 115 grain (1,210 fps) or 124 grain (1,150 fps) options. The 115 grain and 124 grain varieties conserve more energy at 25 yards (328 ft-lbs for both), while the 147 grain bullet carries 299 ft-lbs of energy to 25 yards.

When I struck the watermelons I had lined up, the 124 grain JHP bullets caused them to explode. While I understand this isn’t a true ballistics gel test for penetration and expansion, it still illustrates the potential lethality of these rounds.

Pros and Cons of Speer Gold Dot 9mm Self-Defense Ammo

While testing this ammo, I found many benefits and only a couple of downsides that you should be aware of before purchasing.

Pros Cons
Trusted brand Expensive
Accurate
Reliable Solid recoil
Excellent stopping power

Speer Gold Dot 9mm is manufactured by a brand trusted by law enforcement agencies and civilians across the country. The bonded core JHP bullets are very accurate, expand consistently, and penetrate deeply enough to reach a threat's vitals.

Since Speer uses high-quality components, including nickel-plated brass casings, you can trust that these rounds will fire when you pull the trigger and cycle through your favorite EDC pistol. Speer Gold Dot is now at the top of my list when purchasing new self-defense ammo.

However, be prepared to pay for the higher-quality ammo. It’s not crazy expensive compared to other self-defense rounds, but it is costly. I also noticed it had a little more recoil than I expected from a 124 grain round, but it wasn’t anything serious. I don’t believe it significantly affected my accuracy.

Comparisons With Other Self-Defense Ammo

Parting Shots: Speer Gold Dot 9mm Review

After this ammo test, I appreciated why so many of my law enforcement buddies refuse to fire anything else. Speer Gold Dot 9mm ammo is spectacular. It has become one of my favorite 9mm self-defense loads because it's reliable, accurate, and more than capable of stopping a threat. If you're ready to pick some up, the Speer Gold Dot 9mm 124gr +P — the exact load tested here — is the variant most widely trusted by law enforcement and civilian carriers alike.
