Overview of Federal Ammo

Federal Ammunition began in 1916 in Anoka, Minnesota, originally manufacturing ammo and bicycles. Under Charles L. Horn's leadership from 1922, Federal grew into a renowned ammunition brand. Horn's innovative marketing and commitment to quality helped secure contracts during WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, solidifying Federal's role in military supply.

One of the company’s most trusted modern defensive offerings is Federal HST 9mm ammo, built for consistent expansion and reliability.

Federal's Product Innovation

Federal offers a comprehensive catalog of centerfire, rimfire, and shotshell ammo, with its American Eagle line covering everyday range staples like 38 Super ammo. The company pioneered conservation efforts, including supporting 4-H programs and advocating for the Pittman-Robertson Act, which continues to fund wildlife restoration through ammunition excise taxes.

Federal's Varmint & Predator line reflects the company's commitment to wildlife management, offering hunters high-performance .22-250 ammo loaded with V-MAX and Nosler Ballistic Tip projectiles for long-range accuracy on coyotes and other predators.

Federal also co-developed the 7mm Backcountry with Christensen Arms, and its 7mm Backcountry ammunition uses a Peak Alloy steel case to reach magnum velocity from a short, lightweight hunting rifle.

Modern Manufacturing

Federal's Anoka facility has expanded from its modest beginnings to over 500,000 square feet, producing a wide range of ammo for hunting, self-defense, and law enforcement. Innovations like Hydra-Shok self-defense rounds and American Eagle Syntech polymer-coated bullets highlight Federal's commitment to quality and performance. Federal's dedication to defensive ammunition extends to rimfire cartridges—read our Federal Punch 22 WMR review to see how their backup gun ammunition performs in real-world testing.

Awards and Recognition

Federal has received numerous accolades, including Game & Fish Readers’ Choice Awards and the NRA’s Golden Bullseye. The company remains a trusted name for shooters across the globe.

I have always trusted Federal ammo to be good quality and this 12 gauge ammo once again proves to me that Federal knows what they are doing when it comes to making ammo! I have had no problems what so ever with any of the ammo I purchased from Ammo.com and I'm a life long customer after dealing with them, the ammo arrived quickly and has served its purpose. I used the ammo in my brand new Mossberg 500 and it cycled properly with no problems, consistent pattern, reasonable recoil and came in a handy little ammo can in great shape (Nice little bonus if you ask me!) I would recommend this ammo to anyone looking for a good quality 00 Buck.

I've gone through two cans of this excellent shotgun ammo without complaint. It cycles just fine in my old Winchester 1897, High Standard Supermatic, and a Norinco clone of the Colt 1878 side-by-side. Good patterns and power with manageable recoil. Some ammo cans are loaded with 25-round boxes, others with smaller boxes, but always a total of 175 rounds. An excellent choice for hunting or defense. I'm buying more when it's available.

Every ammo I have purchased and used that has the Federal name on it has been the creme de la creme in my book. The 147 grain JHP is no exception. Whether it's for my revolvers, pistols or long guns I have complete confidence when Federal is with me.

The price on this ammo is amazing, but it is dirty. I shot 250 rounds through a Glock 17 and needed to clean my weapon after 150 rounds. My daughter also bought some because I told her about the great deal. She was shooting a Sig P365 9mm, the Sig does not like the flat nose on this ammo. She shot 100 rounds and was having problems feeding before she finished 50 rounds. We cleaned her weapon, and still had the same problem. I had no feed issues with my Glock. I'm not real sure why Federal decided to go flat nose on this round when they have round nose on their 115 & 124 grain rounds. As good of a deal as this was I don't think I'll be purchasing anymore of this ammo.

Had to use the higher grain bullet in my sub compact auto. The federal 147 grain bullet fed flawlessly and provided very accurate results.

Only shot a dozen rounds at the range. Personal defense and carry ammo currently. Cycled great, no issues cycled cleanly, using it in my FN509, 12, 15, 24 rd mags. Again accurate, cycles clean, and no issues. Can't speak on stopping power, and hope to never have to.

I purchased a small amount (100 rounds) of this ammo strictly to use for personal defense. I wanted a heavier hollow point round in order to get the most stopping power and expansion I can from a 9 mm. I only fired fifty of the one hundred rounds because I wanted to make sure that they feed into my weapon and fire without any problems. Again, I feel that I would want to run at least 200 - 300 of these rounds in order to give a better review. However, the fifty that I did test fire operated from my Glock 26 Gen 4 without any issues. I did notice that with the magazine fully loaded with these rounds opposed to the 124 grain and some of the 115 grain that I was running, the magazine was a little more tough to get it to lock in while loading. Just had to push/hit the mag in a little harder. Operationally though, they ran well.

I have and prefer the HST and Speer Gold Dots as my edc loads. The HST has the most expansion you can find in the gel tests if you pay attention to those. A bit pricey, but.....worth the extra for performance

Great ammo for Self-defense

Seems to work well for me in my Beretta 92s Italian Police turn-in. A possible alternative if you can't or don't want to use +P ammo in your 9mm However, as with the case with every self-dense loading fire at least a full mag (plus one in the chamber if this is how you would use it for self-defense) through the gun to make sure it feeds and ejects all rounds before relying on it for self-defense.

Reviewed alot of u tube videos regarding this ammo. I purchased 12ga and 20ga and both performed flawlessly out of my mossberg 590 and sa 20 guns. The pattern itself is perfect for what I want in a home defense round. 10yds 1" - 1-1/4" , 20 yds 3" - 3-1/2", 40 yds 9"- 10" pattern. No fliers. Very impressive ammo.

Bullet Points: Federal Ammo

Federal Premium has come a long way from selling ammo in gas stations and grocery stores. What started out as a bicycle company has transformed into one of the best-selling ammunition companies in the world.
Federal is known for their premium ammo lines for rifles and shotguns, popular among those looking for self-defense and hunting rounds. Their Hydra-Shok pistol ammo continues to be one of their best-selling products.
They provided bulk ammunition for the U.S. military for WWII, the Korean War and Vietnam. The result of an aggressive marketing approach, their multi-million-dollar government contract continued throughout the latter decades of the 1900s.
The entire Federal line is manufactured out of their plant in Anoka, Minnesota – where more than 1,000 employees produce ammo for rifles, pistols, shotguns and rimfire weapons. Guard Dog ammunition is just one example of how they continue to innovate within the ammo market.
