The 44 S&W Special is an excellent option for self-defense, cowboy action shooting, and target shooting. But a firearm is only as good as the ammo you load into it. That’s why I researched, talked to experts, and tested several cartridges in my search for the best 44 Special ammo. Pros and Cons

  • Trusted brand
  • Reliable
  • Accurate
  • Hard-hitting

Why I Chose It

Speer Gold Dot is the gold standard for self-defense. Countless CCWers and law enforcement officers trust it because it’s reliable, accurate, and will quickly stop a threat.

Of the thousands of Speer Gold Dot rounds I’ve fired, not one has given me a problem. Never a dud, failure to feed or extract in a semi-auto, or any other performance issue. It’s a testament to the high-quality materials and proprietary processes Speer uses to craft their Gold Dot ammunition.

Another reason I love Speer Gold Dot is its accuracy. In a self-defense situation, I need to know that my bullet will strike where I’m aiming. I have that confidence with Speer Gold Dot 220 grain JHP. Whenever I’m slightly off target while firing these rounds, I know it’s something that I’ve done wrong and not an issue with the ammo.

When defending yourself or the lives of your loved ones, you need a round capable of quickly ending the threat. The Gold Dot jacketed hollow point’s electrochemically bonded jacket ensures that it conserves the weight and momentum requisite to reach a threat’s vital organs, even if they are shielded by a barrier. Its nose cavity is also fine-tuned to deliver terminal expansion under a broad range of circumstances.

The biggest drawback is the price tag. Speer Gold Dot 200 grain JHP ammo may be expensive, but it’s worth every penny. You won’t want to train with it every time you visit the range (so be sure to check out the best target shooting load section), but you’ll certainly want it in your new 44 S&W Special revolver if you find yourself in a self-defense situation.

Hornady Critical Defense 165 grain FTX – Best 44 Special Snub Nose Revolver Ammo

Specs:

  • Case: Nickel-plated brass
  • Bullet Type: Flex Tip eXpanding (FTX)
  • Bullet Weight: 165 Grains
  • Muzzle Velocity: 900 fps
  • Muzzle Energy: 297 ft-lbs

Pros and Cons

✓ Pros✗ Cons
  • Trusted brand
  • Designed for short barrels
  • Reliable
  • Accurate
  • Lighter bullet usually penetrates to a shallower depth than a heavier alternative

Why I Chose It

I (along with millions of other CCWers) have trusted Hornady Critical Defense for many years. I love it in compact firearms, such as snub nose revolvers, because it’s designed for short barrels, reliable, accurate, and produces a little less recoil thanks to its lighter bullet.

Hornady designs and optimizes these rounds for a 2.5" barrel. That’s crucial because most self-defense rounds are designed for longer barrels and therefore fail to deliver suitable performance for defense when fired from a shorter tube. Hornady Critical Defense 165 grain FTX, on the other hand, is engineered to make the most effective use of what little muzzle velocity a snub nose revolver’s barrel can produce.

I’ve never had a problem with Hornady Critical Defense in all my years of using it. I’ve always found these rounds accurate and reliable. Thankfully, my life has never depended on the FTX’s polymer plug, which exists to prevent the bullet’s nose cavity from clogging with fabric or other debris and losing its ability to initiate expansion as a result. Even so, it’s reassuring to know that Hornady promises such reliable terminal ballistics.

The lighter 165 grain bullet may reduce your 44 Special snub nose’s recoil. That can help you fire more accurately, but may coincide with shallower penetration. If you need a heavier, hard-hitting bullet, you should choose Speer Gold Dot 200 grain JHP instead.

If you need lighter-recoiling, reliable, and accurate self-defense ammo for your snub nose revolver, Hornady Critical Defense 165 grain FTX is the way to go.

Fiocchi Cowboy Action 210 Grain LFP – Best 44 Special Cowboy Action Shooting Ammo

Fiocchi 44 S&W Special Ammo - 50 Rounds of 210 Grain Flat Point Round Nose (FPRN) Ammunition

$57.99

Specs:

  • Case: Brass
  • Bullet Type: Lead Flat Point (LFP)
  • Bullet Weight: 210 Grains
  • Muzzle Velocity: 750 fps
  • Muzzle Energy: 262 ft-lbs

Pros and Cons

✓ Pros✗ Cons
  • Designed for cowboy action shooting
  • Reliable
  • Consistent
  • Accurate
  • Reduced recoil
  • Expensive

Why I Chose It

Fiocchi Cowboy Action 210 grain LFP ammo is designed for cowboy action shooting. That’s why its bullets aren’t jacketed (which eliminates the risk of brittle copper shrapnel ricocheting off a close-range steel target and flying back at the shooter) and have flat nose profiles (which engage a flat steel surface more effectively than a round nose alternative).

I’ve been impressed with Fiocchi ammo every single time I’ve fired it at the range. It’s consistent and accurate, which are two welcome advantages during a cowboy action shooting competition. Fiocchi achieves such consistency in part by loading double-base powder that is formulated to reduce recoil, as well as produce consistent results across a wide range of temperatures. I also appreciate that Fiocchi coats the lead flat nose bullet in polymer that reduces friction and fouling.

My biggest frustration with this ammo is the high cost. It’s almost as expensive as self-defense ammo. That aside, if you want some of the best 44 Special cowboy action shooting ammo, it’s tough to beat Fiocchi Cowboy Action 210 grain LFP.

Pros and Cons

✓ Pros✗ Cons
  • Reliable
  • Doubles as self-defense ammo
  • Reasonably priced
  • Reliable
  • Accurate
  • Not the cheapest

Why I Chose It

The more I fire PMC Bronze 180 grain JHP at the range, the more I’m impressed by it. A few of my buddies and I recently brought 1,000 PMC rounds to the range. We didn’t have a single issue with them, and were shocked by how accurate they are.

While these are not the cheapest target rounds on the market, they’re also not crazy expensive – especially if you buy in bulk. They are more economical than most other self-defense loads, though. That’s optimal if you’re like me, and prefer to practice with your self-defense ammo so you know exactly what to expect should the need ever arise.

If I were headed to the range today with a 44 Special, I wouldn’t hesitate to grab at least a few boxes of PMC Bronze 180 grain JHP.

Federal Punch 180 grain JHP – Best Ammo for Charter Arms Bulldog 44 Special

Pros and Cons

  • Trusted brand
  • Quality materials and components
  • Reliable

Why I Chose It

Federal is a trusted brand that’s known for producing quality ammunition. Their Personal Defense Punch ammo is carefully crafted to ensure you get the most out of every round. Since it’s designed for self-defense and specifically optimized for the 44 Special’s unique capabilities, it’s a great option for your Charter Arms Bulldog.

Federal Punch is expensive compared to other 44 Special self-defense loads. But it’s worth it. Federal ammo has always performed well for me. I rarely have problems with it. If you need a trusted round to load into your Charter Arms Bulldog, you’ll find that this ammo doesn’t pull any punches.

How to Choose the Best 44 Special Ammo

Picking the best ammo depends on your firearm, intended purpose, and budget. When all three align, you’ve found the perfect ammo.

Firearm Selection

I’ve found that some ammo performs better depending on which firearm is used. Some ammo is also designed for specific firearms, so it will perform better when fired in those guns. This is why I always recommend testing several rounds in small batches to see which one performs best in your firearm.

Use Case

Your intended purpose should drive most of your ammo decisions. A good target round rarely makes a good self-defense round, and vice versa (primarily because of the bullet and cost). A good self-defense round has a JHP bullet; a great self-defense round has a JHP with additional technology that promotes accuracy and more reliable stopping power. And since most 44 Magnum revolvers also chamber 44 Special, it’s worth weighing how the two calibers stack up before you commit to one.

Budget

I always look for the best deal on ammo, which often means buying in bulk. When buying self-defense ammo, I always choose what performs best with my gun – not what’s cheapest.

Parting Shots: Best 44 Special Ammo for Every Practical Situation

Now that you know that Speer Gold Dot 200 grain JHP is the best 44 Special ammo overall and PMC Bronze 180 grain JHP is the best for target shooting and practice, it’s time to stock up and head to the range to see how they perform in your 44 S&W Special. Stay safe!
