Why I Chose It

Hornady Critical Defense is always one of my preferred self-defense ammo choices. Hornady has an excellent and deserved reputation for producing high-quality ammo.

Critical Defense is designed for self-defense, and loaded with low-flash propellant and FTX bullets that perform well (i.e. penetration and terminal expansion) when fired from short-barreled handguns. FTX technology resists clogging during penetration through heavy clothing, which preserves the nose capacity’s potential for expansion. FTX bullets are also known for their excellent accuracy. They hit where you’re aiming.

The biggest drawback, again, is the high price. Hornady Critical Defense is not as expensive as Speer Gold Dot, but it’s not too far off.

Hornady Critical Defense 40 grain FTX ammo is some of the best concealed carry ammo you can own. I wouldn’t hesitate to order a few boxes today.

Why I Chose It

It’s no secret I’m a big fan of Hornady ammo, but that doesn’t change the fact that Hornady makes some of the best ammo on the market.

I love these rounds because they’re great in pistol-cartridge carbines (PCCs), but also perform well in a variety of other firearms. Hornady BLACK ammo is optimized for the AR and other PCC platforms, so it cycles well and is accurate in those firearms.

The V-MAX is a capable self-defense bullet, though its rapid, fragmenting terminal expansion is best suited to varmint hunting. It’s significantly more expensive than the kind of FMJ you’d prefer for target shooting, but its stellar accuracy will show you where your money went regardless of where you fire it.

If you’re looking for a round that you can use in your PCC and in your pistol, then Hornady BLACK 40 grain V-MAX ammo should be at the top of your list.

Why I Chose It

Fiocchi continues to rise in popularity among U.S. firearms enthusiasts. This is partly because their subsonic Range Dynamics 62 grain FMJ is loaded in the USA, reasonably priced, reliable, and optimal for suppressor use.

Their heavyweight 62 grain FMJ bullets keep these rounds subsonic: around 100 fps lower than the speed of sound out of a 4” test barrel. That prevents the sonic boom that a suppressor isn’t designed to muffle.

According to Fiocchi, this ammo is “designed for high-volume training and everyday range use, delivering consistent performance shot after shot.” Its reasonable price point makes that point clear.

I’ve never had a problem when firing Fiocchi ammo. It feeds and ignites reliably. However, these rounds’ FMJ bullets are less than ideal for self-defense. Personally, I would not use FMJs for self-defense because the risk of overpenetration is too high, but that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t stop a threat if they’re all you had available at the moment.

Even though FN uses quality materials and components, these rounds are very reasonably priced. They’re the least expensive on our list, which means you can spend more time at the range without burning through your paycheck.

I love how versatile these rounds are. You can train with the same rounds you plan on firing while hunting or competing. The V-MAX bullet isn’t ideally suited for self-defense, however.
