Overview of 5.7x28 Hollow Point Ammo

The 5.7x28mm works differently from every other handgun cartridge. FN designed it for the P90 and Five-seveN as a small, very fast bullet. Instead of relying on frontal diameter, a 5.7 expanding bullet relies on velocity, fragmentation, and yaw. From a pistol barrel, 40 grain loads run around 1,650 to 1,750 fps, and 27 grain loads run over 2,000 fps.

That's why this page mixes true hollow points with polymer-tipped bullets. The FN 27 grain lead-free JHP is a conventional hollow point. The FN 40 grain V-MAX and Fiocchi's 40 grain polymer tip use a plastic tip over a hollow cavity that drives rapid expansion at 5.7 velocities. Speer and Hornady round out the selection with defensive designs.

Choosing a 5.7x28 expanding load

  • 40 grain V-MAX and polymer tip: the most common 5.7 expanding load, flat-shooting and accurate.
  • 27 grain JHP: lighter and faster, with less recoil and lead-free construction.
  • 500 round cases: the FN SS197SR and Fiocchi 40 grain come in bulk counts that make 5.7 practice affordable.

Expensive for putting holes in paper. Preformance, terminal ballistics and reliability are all excellent.

Great for My Kel-tec 50 round extended pistol. Perfect aim and shot projection, when the bullet hits the target at the range. Has a great propulsion for the 40- grain weight and noise reduction, Very good shotshells.

I bought this ammunition because local supply of 5.7mm ammo was in short suppy. The ammo worked great in my weapon with no malfunctions with either the weapon or ammo. The price was really good and I expect to use ammo.com for my future ammunition needs.

  • ROGER said:

breaking in my 5.7 x 23 have had some problems with other ammo hanging up or not feeding properly. So far, this ammo has been better. Buying in bulk does not save any money by the time you pay for shipping, cheaper to buy a box of 50 at the range.

  • G E said:

As expected. Very good. No problems and delivered quickly

  • Larry said:

I have shot about 250 rounds of this ammo and had only one jam. This occurred when a friend of mine was shooting the weapon, so I don’t have a clear idea as to what caused it.

  • Mark said:

Excellent quality that I expected. Did not expect the price to be that good! Thanks Ammo.com!

This round is fairly new, I guess. That’s why they’re a little pricey. I’ve shopped around and this is the lowest price I’ve found. Accuracy is consistently good. I shoot them in my S&W M&P handgun and my S&W FPC carbine rifle.
