Overview of M193 Ammo

The M193 classic 5.56 cartridge featuring a 55‑grain full-metal jacket bullet, originally adopted by the U.S. military in the early 1960s. It delivers reliable performance, high muzzle velocities around 3,200 fps, and accurate shot placement—making it a trusted option for training, plinking, hunting varmint-sized game, and general range use.

Why Choose M193?

  • Affordability & Availability: As a basic FMJ load, M193 is often less expensive than more complex alternatives like M855, especially when bought in bulk.
  • Compatible Across Platforms: Safe and effective in any AR-15 chambered for 5.56 NATO, but pressured loads should be used with caution in .223 Remington-only rifles.
  • Trusted Military Provenance: Designed to work reliably in M16 rifles, it's battle-tested and simply works—ideal for shooters who value consistency.

How M193 Compares to M855 “Green Tip”

Characteristic M193 M855 (Green Tip)
Bullet Weight 55 gr FMJ 62 gr with steel penetrator
Muzzle Velocity & Energy ~3,215 fps (~1,262 ft‑lbs) ~3,060 fps (~1,637 ft‑lbs)
Barrier Penetration Standard Enhanced—better at penetrating light barriers
Range Performance Solid out to 500 yards Improved accuracy and penetration at longer distances

If you want both availability and modest performance, M193 is hard to beat. But if you need barrier-punching ability and extended-range accuracy, M855 may suit your needs better.

I've used Winchester rounds in other calibers and never been disappointed by them, and I can say the same for these 5.56 rounds. Excellent training rounds, good pricing, and I've had no issues with the first 450 rounds I've used so far.

The rounds were dirty, with some having excess powder or some kind of processing oil/grease on them. A few boxes had 18/19 rounds in them. Worked well in my rifle after 500 rounds so far and were a good price.
