Overview of 30-30 Subsonic Ammo
30-30 subsonic ammo is a niche rifle load – one of the few centerfire rifle cartridges that's been adapted to run below the speed of sound (~1,125 fps at sea level) specifically for suppressed brush hunting and close-range work in settled country. Standard 30-30 factory loads push 150gr bullets at 2,390 fps and 170gr bullets at 2,200 fps, both well into supersonic territory. Subsonic 30-30 throws that performance envelope away in exchange for one thing: a quiet shot.
This isn't a category for shooters chasing longer range or flatter trajectories. It's purpose-built for the lever-action hunter who wants to dispatch hogs, predators, or deer at woods distances without the report carrying across the property line – or for anyone running a 30 caliber suppressor on a Marlin 336 or Winchester 94 and unwilling to defeat the can with a supersonic crack.
When subsonic 30-30 makes sense
- Suppressed lever-action hunting. The Marlin 336 and Winchester 94 are increasingly common suppressor hosts. Subsonic ammo is the only way to actually run quiet.
- Hog and predator dispatch near settled areas. Property-line-friendly noise signature for shooters near neighbors, livestock, or roadways.
- Close-range whitetail in heavy cover. Inside 75 yards, a 190-220gr subsonic 30-30 still puts a deer down cleanly with proper shot placement.
- Pest control on farms and ranches. Coyotes, raccoons, and feral hogs at close range without alarming livestock.
- Lever-action training. Reduced report and recoil for introducing new shooters to a centerfire rifle they'll actually want to shoot again.

How subsonic 30-30 stacks up against other suppressed rifle calibers
| Caliber / Load | Typical Bullet Weight | Velocity | Energy | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30-30 Subsonic | 190-220gr | ~1,050 fps | 500-550 ft-lbs | Lever-action native; flat-nose required for tube mag |
| 300 BLK Subsonic | 220gr | ~1,000 fps | ~490 ft-lbs | Purpose-built subsonic round; AR-15 hosted |
| 45-70 Subsonic | 405gr | ~1,050 fps | ~990 ft-lbs | Heavier hitter; also lever-action compatible |
The tube magazine constraint
The Marlin 336 and Winchester 94 both use tubular magazines that stack rounds nose-to-primer. Pointed (spitzer) bullets can detonate the primer of the round ahead under recoil – which is why traditional 30-30 ammo uses flat-nose or round-nose projectiles, and why Hornady LeveRevolution 30-30 uses the rubber-tipped FTX bullet to solve the problem for supersonic loads. The same constraint applies to subsonic 30-30: stick to flat-nose, round-nose, or polymer-tipped designs. Hard-cast lead bullets (a common handload choice for subsonic) work cleanly in tube mags.
Factory subsonic 30-30 is rare
Unlike 9mm or 45 ACP where major manufacturers carry subsonic SKUs, factory subsonic 30-30 is a niche product. Most subsonic 30-30 shooters handload, working with 190-220gr cast bullets and reduced charges of Trail Boss, Unique, or similar fast-burning powders. Specialty makers like Discreet Ballistics and select Sig Sauer Elite Hunter subsonic offerings round out the limited factory market. If you're running a suppressed lever gun and want factory ammo without rolling your own, expect smaller production runs and intermittent availability.
Effective range
A 220gr subsonic 30-30 drops more than 30 inches at 100 yards from a 25-yard zero. Inside 50 yards it's a flat-enough shooter for woods hunting; past 75 yards you're holding well above the target and energy is dropping toward the floor for clean kills on deer-sized game. Treat subsonic 30-30 as a 75-yard cartridge for hunting and a 100-yard cartridge for pest dispatch.
