30-06 Hollow Point For Sale
Overview of 30-06 Hollow Point
The 168 grain HPBT match loads from Federal and Sellier and Bellot have a hollow tip because of how a match boat-tail bullet is manufactured, not because anyone wants it to open up. The jacket is drawn from the base forward, leaving a small aperture at the nose that improves concentricity and ballistic coefficient. Those bullets are built to punch tight groups at 600 yards, and they are a poor choice on game because they are not designed to expand reliably. The copper loads on this page, the Barnes TSX from Federal and Black Hills Gold and the Remington Core-Lokt Copper SCHP, are the opposite: a machined cavity in a solid copper bullet that peels back into petals on impact and holds close to all of its original weight.
Two jobs, two very different bullets
- Match HPBT, 168 grain: hollow tip is a byproduct of jacket forming. Built for accuracy at distance. Use it for load development, competition, and confirming zero. Do not use it as a hunting bullet.
- Solid copper hollow point, 150 to 180 grain: Barnes TSX and Core-Lokt Copper expand into petals and retain nearly all their weight, driving deep on elk-sized game.
- Lead-free by construction: because the copper loads carry no lead core, they are legal in California and other jurisdictions that restrict lead hunting ammunition.
- Weight picks the animal: 150 grain runs flatter for deer at range, 180 grain hits harder and penetrates deeper for elk and moose.
Which brands load 30-06 hollow points?
- Federal 30-06 Ammo - both camps in one catalog, 168 grain HPBT match and 165 grain Barnes TSX
- Remington 30-06 Ammo - home of the 150 grain Core-Lokt Copper SCHP
Most 30-06 hunting ammo is soft point or polymer tipped rather than hollow point, so if you want the wider catalog use the Bullet Type filter in the left sidebar to step outside HP.
