Overview of 6mm ARC

Introduced by Hornady in 2020, the 6mm ARC (Advanced Rifle Cartridge) was developed at the request of a specialized group within the United States Department of Defense for its multipurpose combat rifle program. The cartridge was designed to maximize the potential of the AR-15 platform while addressing the ballistic limitations of the 5.56 NATO at extended ranges. Based on the 6.5 Grendel case necked down to accept 6mm bullets, the 6mm ARC delivers substantially better long-range performance than the 5.56 NATO with similar recoil, yet provides comparable ballistics to the .308 Winchester with 30% less weight in both firearm and ammunition. The round was SAAMI-approved in January 2020 and represents the first time in history that a commercial cartridge announcement was preceded by military adoption.

The 6mm ARC takes full advantage of modern, heavy-for-caliber 6mm bullets with high ballistic coefficients, providing excellent accuracy and ballistic performance at extended ranges. With typical bullet weights ranging from 103 to 108 grains, the cartridge is effective beyond 1,000 yards from an 18-inch barrel while maintaining a maximum cartridge overall length of 2.260 inches to fit standard AR-15 magazines. The low recoil characteristics make it accessible to shooters of various experience levels, while the flat trajectory and minimal wind drift have made it increasingly popular among precision rifle competitors, hunters pursuing medium game, and long-range target shooters. Since the 6mm ARC shares the same parent case as the 6.5 Grendel, shooters often debate which cartridge better suits their needs for AR-15 platform shooting. While both offer mild recoil and excellent performance in compact rifles, they each have distinct advantages depending on your intended use. How Does The 6mm ARC Compare To Other Calibers?

Caliber/Ammunition Recoil Pros Cons
22 ARC 6mm ARC has more 6mm ARC has heavier bullets, better long-range energy retention, and more versatility for hunting medium game 6mm ARC has more recoil, 22 ARC offers flatter trajectory at closer ranges and is better suited for varmints
.243 Winchester 6mm ARC has less 6mm ARC has lower recoil, better AR-15 compatibility, and lighter platform weight 6mm ARC has steeper trajectory and limited ammunition selection
6.5 Grendel 6mm ARC has slightly less 6mm ARC has flatter trajectory, higher BC bullets, and better long-range performance 6mm ARC has less stopping power for large game and lighter bullet weight
5.56 NATO 6mm ARC has more 6mm ARC has flatter trajectory, better long-range accuracy, higher stopping power, and superior ballistics beyond 300 yards 6mm ARC has more recoil, more expensive ammo, shorter barrel life, and limited availability

I don't intend to buy them again. Note that the 105gr Hornady rounds cycle fine for me.

My manufacturer assembled RISE Armament Watchman rifle doesn't like these light rounds. My gun short stroked almost every time with these, so I've only fired 15 rounds. As a result, I can't comment on what kind of groups they produce. I'm sure they could work fine in some other ARs. Maybe give them a try if you like to tinker with your setup though. I don't intend to buy them again. Note that the 105gr Hornady rounds cycle fine for me.
