223 Wylde vs. 223 Rem: Which 223 Chamber Is Better?
The 223 Wylde vs. 223 Rem isn’t a cartridge comparison. Instead, it’s a barrel chamber comparison. As you continue reading this article, you’ll discover what makes them different and which one is the better option for your next AR-15 build.
223 Wylde vs. 223 Rem: What’s the Difference & Why Does It Matter?
Unlike the 223 Remington, which is a rifle cartridge and barrel chambering, the 223 Wylde is only a barrel chambering. Bill Wylde designed the 223 Wylde for NRA High Power competitors who wanted improved 223 Rem accuracy out of a 5.56 NATO-compatible chamber, according to Armory Life.
The 223 Remington chamber has a 0.040" throat, 0.2240" throat diameter, and 3.10° leade angle. The 223 Wylde chamber has a 0.078" throat length, 0.2242" throat diameter, and a shallower 1.25° leade angle. The 5.56 NATO chamber has a 0.070" throat length, 0.2265" throat diameter, and a 1.20° leade angle.
| Chamber Spec | 223 Remington | 223 Wylde | 5.56 NATO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Throat Length | 0.040" | 0.078" | 0.070" |
| Throat Diameter | 0.2240" | 0.2242" | 0.2265" |
| Leade Angle | 3.10° | 1.25° | 1.20° |
Essentially, the 223 Wylde chamber splits the difference between the 5.56 and 223 Rem. It combines 223 Remington chamber’s tighter .224” throat diameter with a leade angle closer to that of the 5.56 NATO chamber.
These dimensions allow the 223 Wylde to handle the higher pressures of the 5.56, which are dangerous in a 223 Rem chamber. SAAMI sets 223 Remington's maximum average pressure at 55,000 psi. However, 5.56 NATO military-spec ammo often reaches 62,000 psi.
It’s safe to fire 5.56 ammo in a 5.56 or 223 Wylde chamber, but not in a 223 Rem chamber. Only 223 Rem ammo is safe to fire in a 223 Rem chamber.
Why Choose the 223 Wylde?
Here are the reasons to choose a 223 Wylde chamber for your next rifle.
- Ammo versatility: Safely fire 223 Rem and 5.56 ammo.
- Better accuracy: Fire 223 Rem more accurately than a 5.56 chamber allows.
Since a 223 Wylde barrel opens the door to 5.56, our picks for the best 5.56 ammo for defense are worth a look, and 5.56 bulk ammo is where the savings show up if you shoot it often.
Why Choose the 223 Rem?
Here are the reasons to choose a 223 Rem chamber in your next rifle.
- Tighter chamber tolerances: 223 Rem chamber dimensions reduce bullet "jump" before it engages the rifling, which promotes greater accuracy with 223 Rem ammo.
- Match-grade tuning: You can better fine-tune your loads for shooting competitions.

Parting Shots: Is the 223 Wylde or 223 Rem Better for You?
So, which chamber is better for you: 223 Wylde or 223 Rem? The 223 Wylde is better if you want ammo versatility without forfeiting accuracy. The 223 Rem chamber is better if you want peak accuracy while only firing 223 Rem ammo.
